AO Going Away Party

It’s rare as a business owner to find a staff member who treats your business as their own.  I can’t say enough about this guy in terms of his work ethic and impact on our community over the years.  We are super bummed to lose such a great coach but also are happy for him in his pursuit of a new career as a Radiology Tech with Kaiser.  So lets have a party to give him a good send off and say thank you for his service to the gym over they years.

Eileen is planning to host the shin-dig at her house (4145 Lagunita Ct) on September 16th @ 6PM.  Host is providing beer and wine and we are going to get a taco truck as well.  We will be asking each person to bring $20 cash to the event to cover food.  Please RSVP to comments section here so we can get a head count for the food truck.

Winescursion 2.0

“The Aquila Women’s Wine-Scursion 2.0”

Ok, ladies…this event is for YOU!!

Mark your calendars NOW!!

SUNDAY, AUGUST 13th is the day we will embark on our 2nd Annual “Aquila Women’s Wine-Scursion”!!

This year, however, we are switching up our routine and destination…but still expect the day to be equally amazing!

Here’s the plan…

We will meet at the gym at 9:00am.

We will then walk over to The Mimosa House to have brunch, so to properly nourish ourselves (and pre-drink, if you so choose) for the day ahead.

After we sip and dine, we will rally up Uber/Lyft SUVs to safely take us to The Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg. Here we will be greeted with 13 different wineries in one location for us to pick and choose whom to sample from.

Should you feel like you may want snacks for later in the day, please feel free to bring a picnic lunch or snacks with you. {Please note, NO outside ice chests or alcoholic beverages NOT purchased on site, are permitted.} You can also choose to purchase food at the featured food truck they’ll have onsite that day, or from their onsite deli. We will stake our claim somewhere on the lawn, in the shade, or wherever suits us best to enjoy the day at this amazing property.

The wineries close promptly at 5:00pm, so it’s safe to say we will return back to home base (aka, the gym) by around (or no later than) 6:00pm or so. Please make sure to have a designated driver waiting there for you, should you believe you’ll need one, or make whatever arrangements are proper for you to get home safely!

Please come prepared to pay for your brunch, your portion of the ride there and back, whatever tasting fees that may be charged (ranging from $5-$10, depending on the winery), and any other food, wine or items you may want to purchase that day.

If you’d like to preview the wineries that we’ll be visiting, or read up on the property, click here: http://oldsugarmill.com/wineries.html

We will make a reservation at The Mimosa House so we won’t have to wait to be seated amongst the craziness of Sunday brunch goers. So…PLEASE post to comments if you’ll be joining us, so that I can make a reservation that will accommodate everyone.

One last note of encouragement…
EVERY last woman (21 years +), is invited and HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to partake in this social event!! Those of us who went last year, unanimously declared it a super fun day and several members got to meet each other for the first time. So, if you’re a newbie or a longtime member, please know, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a great time and become more familiar with the badass women you workout with!!

Please feel free to ask Laura Goulding any and all questions you may have, either in the comments below, in person, or on our special group page just for this event, “The Aquila Women’s Wine-Scursion.”

NOW…mark off your calendar as being “BUSY” on SUNDAY, AUGUST 13th, and get ready to have a great day with your fellow gym ladies!

Here’s what your neighbors are saying about us:

Nic and Lauren Williams
We have been members of Aquila for several years now and plan to be members for many years to come. There are so many things we love about the gym….it’s a short walk from our house, the classes are fun and can be as competitive and challenging as you want to make them, the workouts are programmed in a way that accommodates all ability levels, the members are all awesome people, and the coaches are extremely good at what they do and take a lot of care in making sure that everyone has a great experience and is working towards their individual goals. Our experience at Aquila has been very positive and has exceeded our expectations for what a gym can be. Aquila has become a big part of the East Sac / River Park community and we definitely recommend it!
Angela Felsted
Back in 2008, I realized that I couldn’t continue my current fitness program. The treadmill and weight room had become incredibly boring, group fitness classes were becoming a struggle to get to, and my jogs around the neighborhood weren’t challenging. I was constantly counting my calories and not ever looking and feeling the way I thought I should. Even worse, I was never in better shape or leaner. Something had to change.I joined Aquila Fitness soon after. The coaches were attentive and thorough with their instruction. Their level of knowledge, skill and support remains unparalleled in the fitness industry. They continue to program challenging, new and fun workouts daily. I have learned to to do things I never thought possible in a safe and non-intimidating environment. I have made wonderful and supportive friends of all ages and all walks of life. My experience couldn’t have been better.
No other fitness program has kept my interest for this long. It’s by far one the the best fitness programs out there. Joining Aquila is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Serge Stanich
In 2014, I was looking to step up my training and fitness level and I began looking at different options. I competed and coached college rowing in my 20s, but I have never been able to get back to the same fitness level as I no longer have the free time to dedicate to a team sport. When I first came to Aquila, I admit that I was intimidated by the level of fitness and strength of the regular athletes that I saw but I also noticed a spectrum of athletes at different levels. I decided to try and I have loved every workout since. The coaching staff are some of the most knowledgeable and best trained I have met. Every work out is scaled for the complete novice to the elite athlete and all of the athletes are supportive of everyone success. Regardless of whether my training opportunities are limited to just one day a week or twice a day every day, I have found Aquila to provide both a great physical challenge and a lesson in strength and fitness training. I love it and recommend it for anyone looking for their next fitness challenge. If you are looking to complement a training program for any competitive sport or just looking for an opportunity to improve your fitness, Aquila can provide the opportunity and the training to achieve your goals.
Laura Goulding
I’ve been a resident of River Park my entire life and a member of Aquila since January 2013. I used to see the gym sign and the members working out in the parking lot every day on my way to work and decided to finally bite the bullet and give them a call myself, so to help me in my journey to lose weight. While I’ve definitely dropped some weight over the years, I’ve gained so much more…friendships, camaraderie, strength and a better overall attitude about myself. All workouts are modified to fit your abilities, so working out here is literally for everyone! And best of all…it’s fun and super close to home! I’ve visited other CrossFit gyms in the state and elsewhere while on vacation, and no other gym has coaches like we do! Each and every coach at Aquila, want nothing more than for you to be safe, to get strong and to do YOUR very best. I have absolutely no regrets about becoming a member and am sad if I’m away or unable to attend my daily WOD with them. Come join us and discover your new favorite part of your day!
Matt and Annie
In my early 40’s I realized that despite regular cycling and yoga, I was getting slower, less flexible, and less coordinated. A friend at work who was at least 15 years older and 30 lbs heavier told me she had started CrossFit and was loving it. I thought, “If she can do it, so can I!” I was afraid that the coaches would yell and be a little mean, but they were actually very supportive. I really like the feeling of being strong, having good endurance, and being physically capable. The community at Aquila is a very warm and friendly group, and we share a lot of laughs. I recommend Aquila to everybody who is ready to invest in their long term health and strength–I mean, we are all going to start getting weaker eventually–lets put that day off a little longer! – Annie
Let’s put it this way. How many 6’4″ people about to turn 50 do you know who can do handstands against a wall, sprint full speed, and get into a solid squat with 270 pounds on their back? The coaches at Aquila have helped me move like a much younger person. Plus it’s fun and close by. -Matt
Jeremy and Paula
Aquila Fitness has changed the way I think about fitness and “being in shape.” They offer a truly dynamic workout experience that can be shaped, or “scaled,” to fit the needs or limitations of each member while at the same time pushing each member to achieve their personal best…effort (and safe form) is what matters most and you’ll never be bored with the same old routine! The owners and coaches are extremely accommodating for members with limitations or injuries. Finally, Aquila is a community within our community and we hope you’ll come check it out!
Jen Reynaga
I first went to Aquila (then Crossfit East Sac) in 2009 when I was in pursuit of a 3:40 CIM finish time–a goal Justin and Travis helped me meet. Since then they have trained me and helped adapt through a bad ankle injury (not received at the gym) and a burgeoning auto-immune disease. I came to them a broke-down endurance runner. At 50 they have made me stronger than I have ever been.”
Jessica Larsen
I have been going to Aquila Fitness for almost 4 years. Often people seem intimidated by CrossFit, but the Aquila community is very inviting, and the staff are really good at adjusting the workouts for all levels. I love the social aspect of Aquila. I find that I often do as much socializing as I do working out. I recommend giving Aquila a try. The location and friendly staff and members can’t be beat. You’ll get a great workout, and you can’t beat the convenience of a gym 3 minutes from your house.
Mark Holeman
Here it goes…At first I was a little leery and intimidated by CrossFit but the coaches at Aquila were great at explaining things and keeping things simple while learning the movements. Now I look forward going to the gym. The community is amazing and it is a great stress relief after work. I have accomplished goals that I never thought were possible when I started. Come by and check it out.
Sean and Jeni O’Brien
I am a typical workaholic and all those business dinners were not helping my waistline. I knew I had to do something and get back on track and take care of myself. I figured I had no excuses if I joined the closest gym to RP. Aquila also helped me with a meal plan to get back into shape. Literally two months later I met my wife and the rest is history. We love everyone at the gym and of course the commute!
Justin Davis
I have been a member of Aquila Fitness for over four years and am a River Park resident. A few words that come to mind when thinking about the gym experience at Aquila are community, diversity, fun, hard work, toughness, perseverance, progress, and yes it’s true, a little pain. The one thing that binds everyone who attends this gym is a commitment to better oneself through fitness. The members are from all walks of life and yet from the beginners to the more experienced individuals the common denominator is effort. It doesn’t matter what your ability level may be, or what you do professionally, everyone is equal once you step foot inside the box. I describe the experience at Aquila as a “win, win, win” as the work you do enhances so many other aspects of one’s life. I am most grateful for the community aspect at Aquila, the people I’ve met, and even more so for the dedicated and committed coaches who truly care and have a passion for what they do – we are lucky to have them. Aquila Fitness has been a uniquely beneficial experience to me.

Rachel Friedline – Remarkables Media

We all know there are some bad websites out there. Need updates on your existing site, or want to completely overhaul to create a brand new site? Drop me a line!

I opened up Remarkables Media, a web design and development agency in 2013. Website updates, brand new sites, WordPress, eCommerce, social media, graphic design, any other strange internet request or idea, I’ve probably been apart of at some point! In addition to taking care of my Remarkables clients, I also own and operate a few eCommerce businesses as well.

Prior to working for myself, I was Creative Director for another agency here in Sac since 2010. And before that, I lived in NYC, working at The Food Network and Barnes and Noble (.com) on their web teams. Call me the jack of all internet trades!

Feel free to send me an email rachel@remarkablesmedia.com or holler at me at the gym to let me know if you need any web help!

Topher Stevenson M.D.

My name is Topher Stephenson. I am a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist in East Sac. I did my training at UC Davis and have been in Sacramento every since. One of my special interests is Regenerative Medicine. This should be of interest to any Cross Fitter that has had an injury to a joint, ligament or tendon that just won’t heal. The same can be said for those with neck or back pain.
Musculoskeletal medicine is going through a revolution just like our understanding of exercise and diet. The old paradigm of treatment for acute or chronic injury was rest, ice, ibuprofen, therapy and if things were not getting better steroid injection then surgery. While rest, ice, appropriate therapy and, when needed, the right surgery all have their places in healing injuries physicians have for years over-used powerful anti-inflammatories in the form of steroid injections and medications like ibuprofen or Aleve. These may not be the right tools for the job.
Regenerative Injection Therapies (RIT) are changing the way musculoskeletal injuries are treated. RIT works by stimulating your body’s own ability to heal itself. By injecting solutions into injured tissues your body is tricked into thinking there is a NEW injury. The body then starts rebuilding the injured tissue (ligament, tendon or connective tissue). The two most popular injections are prolotherapy which uses a dextrose solution and Platelet Rich Plasma which is a concentrated solution of platelets from your own blood.
The CrossFit community has discarded many of the old paradigms surrounding exercise and fitness. It is time to think “outside the box” when it comes to how to heal the injuries that are limiting our full potential.
For more information you can take a look at my website: www.tsmdinc.com or just google “prolotherapy” or “prp”.

John Ortego – Parkside Compounding Pharmacy and Wellness Center

Parkside Compounding Pharmacy & Wellness Center opened for business in 2009, taking over a space that had been the neighborhood’s corner drug for fifty-plus years under the name Land Park Pharmacy. Strictly speaking, Parkside was a from-scratch business started in a completely empty shell. A full year passed between Land Park Drug’s closing and our opening. We (my wife Michelle and I) were betting on most of the old drug store’s customers returning, which they did, just not quite at the rate we initially predicted. There were lean times and iffy days of wondering how we’d get through. Nonetheless, business is now thriving, with plenty of demand and fairly little competition in the niche we’ve managed to carve out for ourselves, so we’re very grateful.

The pharmacy’s specialty focus is compounding. If you don’t already know, compounding is the creation of custom dosage forms and/or delivery systems that fit in special situations where a commercially available medication doesn’t exist. One common example is a veterinary patient (usually a cat or dog, but the occasional rabbit, rat, bearded lizard, etc.), where an antibiotic is indicated or a chronic medication for maybe thyroid or blood pressure, and the required dose or suitable dosage form is not commercially available. This is where the compounding pharmacist comes into play to create something the owner can administer or give to the pet to take willingly—the ol’ hide a pill in a hotdog technique doesn’t always work in every situation.

We fill in the gaps in other areas of human medicine as well. The most common is BHRT (bio-identical hormone replacement) where we create custom blends of hormones to fit patients’ particular needs– which in women is usually a little more complicated, and in men it’s often simply testosterone supplementation. In both cases, it’s replacing the hormones the body makes less of as it ages and thereby restoring many of the desirable youthful characteristics and functions of earlier years. Pediatrics, dermatology, hospice, pain, rehab, gastroenterology, the list goes on and on with the various areas where compounding finds a place to be helpful.

Most of our outreach is directly to doctors and veterinarians, as the general populace is largely unaware of compounding or how it may serve them until they’re referred by their doctor for a specific need. You might hear our ad on the radio if you’re tuned to 101.5, but aside from that, our marketing efforts aim to maintain solid relationships with our established doctors and spread awareness to prospective new ones.

Michelle operates the “front end” of the business, so there’s a pretty lady to welcome customers and make a good first impression (they hide me in back). Her stylish flare and business savvy shows through her hip and eclectic gift shop/boutique that sells lots of treasures, from gifts, books, cards and toys to jewelry and make-up. Additionally, she runs our skin spa where our medical esthetician provides services like facials and waxing or microderm and peels. She’s knowledgeable about skincare with top-end product lines to support her.

It’s a cool space; a genuine mom and pop, brick and mortar store—a rarity these days. And, we’ve got a lot going on, but I’m always happy to field questions and welcome new opportunities for business. As a wellness center, we try to be a resource for people to find practitioners, traditional or alternative, to help maintain and optimize one’s health (or their pet’s). Please, feel free to drop a line or pop in and check us out. We’re in the Land Park shopping center across from the zoo between Sprouts and La Bou. Stay fit!

David Rygg, Life Changed

David is coming up on his 1 year Aquila anniversary in July.  After seeing his outstanding results form the Nutrition Overhaul, I asked him to do a write up on his experience there and a full testimonial as well.  We are super proud of this guy and honored to be a part of helping him transform not only his body but his lifestyle.  Thank you David for your persistent effort and coachability, you freakin’ rock dude!

Washed up David Beckham Needed Help
Of course I am merely a David Beckham wanna be. I have neither his money nor looks, but I was a soccer player. I have been a soccer fan my whole life and have played just about as long. The last 5 years have been rough. As I got older my injury level seemed to increase, and 3 years ago it climaxed when I busted my ankle playing indoor.

I realized that the injuries stemmed from a lack of general fitness, and carrying too much extra weight.  I really wasn’t willing to correct the problem, so I decided it was time to hang up the cleats. The next couple of years I did nothing and actually found myself depressed. Work was getting to me and I was really not enjoying myself. Then a met a girl that changed my life, and I decided that I needed to get into shape. I started going to 24 hour fitness and thought it would be my answer but quickly realized it wasn’t. There was no social interaction, I wasn’t really sure I was using the machines correctly, and overall everything about it just felt wrong. The answer at the gym was to get a personal trainer. I had watched some of the personal trainers at the gym, and I really wasn’t impressed. They seem really uninterested in their clients. I decided I needed something different.

In July 2016 at the age of 50, some prodding and a Google search turned up Aquila Fitness. So, I signed up for the free intro, met Justin, came home and thought to myself, “what the hell have I got myself into.” I survived CrossFit 101 and made way into the GPP program. After a couple of weeks of GPP, I realized not only could I do this, but I loved it. This was the best thing I had done for myself. I was getting in much better shape, I loved the coaches, and the members were actually talking to each other. It was like a family, and it was exactly what I had been looking for. As I progressed, in class they added another challenge…the Nutrition Overhaul.

Through fitness and nutritional development, Aquila has changed my life. In the last 4 months, my weight has gone from 209 to 195, and my body fat was dropped from 19.4 to 14.8 plus I am becoming stronger. I’ve lost about 20lbs total in 10 months, with around a 35lb total fat loss and a gain of about 15lbs of lean muscle.  I sleep better, have more energy and generally feel much better, plus I seem to set new personal records each week. I am in better shape, I feel better, I look better, and I am a much happier person. I get complements about my appearance from family and friends, co-workers, and gym members and it just ads to my enjoyment.

Joining this gym is the best thing I have done for myself in my adult life. I would highly recommend it to anyone, who like me, just wants to look better than most of their friends. The coaches here are the best coaches I have ever worked with. I cannot thank them enough for their support and guidance. Aquila is my gym family now, and I am so thankful for the support I get from fellow members. If you are reading this and on the fence about how to re-vitalize yourself, do yourself a favor and give Aquila a try. Do not get me wrong… learning CrossFit and changing nutritional habits are not easy, but if I can do it, you can too and it will be best thing you have ever done for yourself.

Upcoming Events

SATURDAY, JUNE 10th =
East Sac Pops In The Park
Bertha Henschel Park (160 45th St)
@ 6:00pm

This is an annual FREE concert series, and this year we decided to try out a different venue, than the normal Glenn Hall location. FREE music will be provided by The John Skinner Band (think Big Band, Rock & Roll and everything in between), while food and drinks can be purchased from local vendors. Bring your family, friends, something to sit on (chair/blanket) and your own snacks/beverages, and enjoy a little “out of the box” time with your fellow Aquila members.

SUNDAY, JUNE 11th =
Yoga In The Park
Tahoe Park (3501 59th Street)
@ 9:00am

This is a FREE offer to any and all ages and skill level! And it happens to be a GREAT rest day workout (and excuse to work on your tan) to help stretch and mobilize from your week’s worth of CrossFit WODs, we know you all will be participating in! Bring your own yoga mat if you have one…if not, there are some available to borrow should you be new to this form of workout. A blanket or towel is also sufficient. Be sure to bring a towel to wipe yourself down with and plenty of water. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes early to park and claim your spot on the lawn. Class length is 75 minutes.

If you have any questions, etc., please feel free to post to comments. Otherwise…we’ll see you Saturday AND Sunday of next weekend!

Last year, a few of us celebrated Father’s Day by letting our kids pelt their dads with paintballs. We would like to do the same this year and thought it would be great to do so with the Aquila membership. If available, please join us for a few fun games of paintball and/or food and drinks after. Details are as follows:

SUNDAY, JUNE 18th
Paintball 12 noon – 3:30; Z Pizza @ 4ish
Capital Edge Paintball,
9391 Florin Road Sacramento
Zpizza, 6601 Folsom Blvd. Sacramento

Anyone over the age of 10 is invited. Please check out www.capitaledgepaintball.com for more information. If you haven’t played paintball before, please note the clothing recommendation of athletic shoes, long paints, and long sleeve shirts and/or sweatshirts for protection as the paintballs do sometimes leave bruises. Cost for the rental package is $40 for the day which includes admission, equipment, 100 paintballs and unlimited compressed air refills. 100 paintballs are barely enough for 1 game so it would probably be another $25 or so each to split boxes of paintballs.

Please leave rsvp in comments by so we get a headcount for both paintball and food/drinks to follow.
