David Rygg, Life Changed

David is coming up on his 1 year Aquila anniversary in July.  After seeing his outstanding results form the Nutrition Overhaul, I asked him to do a write up on his experience there and a full testimonial as well.  We are super proud of this guy and honored to be a part of helping him transform not only his body but his lifestyle.  Thank you David for your persistent effort and coachability, you freakin’ rock dude!

Washed up David Beckham Needed Help
Of course I am merely a David Beckham wanna be. I have neither his money nor looks, but I was a soccer player. I have been a soccer fan my whole life and have played just about as long. The last 5 years have been rough. As I got older my injury level seemed to increase, and 3 years ago it climaxed when I busted my ankle playing indoor.

I realized that the injuries stemmed from a lack of general fitness, and carrying too much extra weight.  I really wasn’t willing to correct the problem, so I decided it was time to hang up the cleats. The next couple of years I did nothing and actually found myself depressed. Work was getting to me and I was really not enjoying myself. Then a met a girl that changed my life, and I decided that I needed to get into shape. I started going to 24 hour fitness and thought it would be my answer but quickly realized it wasn’t. There was no social interaction, I wasn’t really sure I was using the machines correctly, and overall everything about it just felt wrong. The answer at the gym was to get a personal trainer. I had watched some of the personal trainers at the gym, and I really wasn’t impressed. They seem really uninterested in their clients. I decided I needed something different.

In July 2016 at the age of 50, some prodding and a Google search turned up Aquila Fitness. So, I signed up for the free intro, met Justin, came home and thought to myself, “what the hell have I got myself into.” I survived CrossFit 101 and made way into the GPP program. After a couple of weeks of GPP, I realized not only could I do this, but I loved it. This was the best thing I had done for myself. I was getting in much better shape, I loved the coaches, and the members were actually talking to each other. It was like a family, and it was exactly what I had been looking for. As I progressed, in class they added another challenge…the Nutrition Overhaul.

Through fitness and nutritional development, Aquila has changed my life. In the last 4 months, my weight has gone from 209 to 195, and my body fat was dropped from 19.4 to 14.8 plus I am becoming stronger. I’ve lost about 20lbs total in 10 months, with around a 35lb total fat loss and a gain of about 15lbs of lean muscle.  I sleep better, have more energy and generally feel much better, plus I seem to set new personal records each week. I am in better shape, I feel better, I look better, and I am a much happier person. I get complements about my appearance from family and friends, co-workers, and gym members and it just ads to my enjoyment.

Joining this gym is the best thing I have done for myself in my adult life. I would highly recommend it to anyone, who like me, just wants to look better than most of their friends. The coaches here are the best coaches I have ever worked with. I cannot thank them enough for their support and guidance. Aquila is my gym family now, and I am so thankful for the support I get from fellow members. If you are reading this and on the fence about how to re-vitalize yourself, do yourself a favor and give Aquila a try. Do not get me wrong… learning CrossFit and changing nutritional habits are not easy, but if I can do it, you can too and it will be best thing you have ever done for yourself.

Upcoming Events

SATURDAY, JUNE 10th =
East Sac Pops In The Park
Bertha Henschel Park (160 45th St)
@ 6:00pm

This is an annual FREE concert series, and this year we decided to try out a different venue, than the normal Glenn Hall location. FREE music will be provided by The John Skinner Band (think Big Band, Rock & Roll and everything in between), while food and drinks can be purchased from local vendors. Bring your family, friends, something to sit on (chair/blanket) and your own snacks/beverages, and enjoy a little “out of the box” time with your fellow Aquila members.

SUNDAY, JUNE 11th =
Yoga In The Park
Tahoe Park (3501 59th Street)
@ 9:00am

This is a FREE offer to any and all ages and skill level! And it happens to be a GREAT rest day workout (and excuse to work on your tan) to help stretch and mobilize from your week’s worth of CrossFit WODs, we know you all will be participating in! Bring your own yoga mat if you have one…if not, there are some available to borrow should you be new to this form of workout. A blanket or towel is also sufficient. Be sure to bring a towel to wipe yourself down with and plenty of water. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes early to park and claim your spot on the lawn. Class length is 75 minutes.

If you have any questions, etc., please feel free to post to comments. Otherwise…we’ll see you Saturday AND Sunday of next weekend!

Last year, a few of us celebrated Father’s Day by letting our kids pelt their dads with paintballs. We would like to do the same this year and thought it would be great to do so with the Aquila membership. If available, please join us for a few fun games of paintball and/or food and drinks after. Details are as follows:

SUNDAY, JUNE 18th
Paintball 12 noon – 3:30; Z Pizza @ 4ish
Capital Edge Paintball,
9391 Florin Road Sacramento
Zpizza, 6601 Folsom Blvd. Sacramento

Anyone over the age of 10 is invited. Please check out www.capitaledgepaintball.com for more information. If you haven’t played paintball before, please note the clothing recommendation of athletic shoes, long paints, and long sleeve shirts and/or sweatshirts for protection as the paintballs do sometimes leave bruises. Cost for the rental package is $40 for the day which includes admission, equipment, 100 paintballs and unlimited compressed air refills. 100 paintballs are barely enough for 1 game so it would probably be another $25 or so each to split boxes of paintballs.

Please leave rsvp in comments by so we get a headcount for both paintball and food/drinks to follow.

Sabrina Teller – Environmental Attorney, Remy Moose Manley, LLP

My practice focuses on California and federal environmental and land use law, especially the California Environmental Quality Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. My firm represents state and local agencies, developers, and occasionally neighborhood and environmental groups in all phases of environmental review, land use entitlement processes, agency rulemaking, and litigation. My firm literally wrote the book on CEQA. Our treatise, Guide to CEQA, is used by planners, lawyers, and judges and has been cited in numerous appellate decisions. We counsel our clients on how best to comply with state and federal environmental review requirements in order to get through the entitlement and development process with a defensible record, and defend them in mandamus litigation through the trial courts and appellate courts. I also regularly teach continuing education courses on CEQA to planners and lawyers around the state.

I keep hoping for the day that I get to challenge opposing counsel to a max squat, in heels.

Cori Preheim – Extreme K9’s Dog Walking Service

I am currently the only dog walking business providing off leash adventures on the river. Probably because off leash dogs are not legal at the river and I’m the only one crazy enough to walk six dogs at a time. How does one learn this skill you ask? I am completely self taught and I’ve watched every episode of the Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. I am totally qualified! While this is all true, I have now spent over six years honing my skills and logged thousands of hours out with the dogs. Malcom Gladwell wrote about the “10,000 hour rule”. It takes 10,000 hours to achieve mastery in any given field.  I’m getting close folks, very close to achieving pack leader mastery in off-leash dog walking. There should be a certificate for these things!

In 2010, I had been a police officer for 12 years. We were planning to have our first child and I desperately wanted to be present when we raised our babies. I took our dog out to the river often and looked online for someone who could hike with her when I was at work. None of the local dog walkers offered this service. The idea for off-leash adventures and the call of the outdoors took hold and never let go. I borrowed my friends dogs, I scouted river accesses and trails, removed fish hooks, avoided rattle snakes, had all the dogs jump out of the truck on me…it was regularly a three ring circus for the first year. I thought, “No wonder no one is doing this; I must be insane.” Thankfully I am a little nuts and when our first daughter was born in 2012, I quit my very secure career (pension and all). I have never been happier, even when one of the dogs rolls in dead fish.
Today we are a legit service. I hired my first employee this year (thank you Ballas for the background check!). We offer daily pack hikes at the river rain or shine, Monday through Friday. We can also do weekends with a little notice and I am able to board well behaved dogs in our home. When your dog becomes a pack member, you are considered family to us. Check out our website and like our Facebook. Come run with the pack!

Will Camy – Litigation Attorney Porter Scott, APC

Avenue about a mile from Aquila Fitness. I currently specialize in defending public entities located throughout northern California in personal injury, civil rights, and employment matters in both federal and state court. I have also defended small businesses and landowners in ADA lawsuits and contract disputes. On occasion, I have also represented personal injury Plaintiffs. Our firm has a broad civil litigation practice including personal injury, construction defect, medical malpractice, employment, and business related matters. We also have attorneys who perform transactional work including business planning and contracts. Two very important things to know: (1) I am a much better attorney than Chad Roberts and (2) Our firm is the reigning back-to-back-to-back Sacramento Barrister’s Co-Ed Softball League Champions.

Laura Goulding – Sac Valley Alarm Safe and Lock

I am third generation to two East Sacramento businesses that operate next door to each other. And while I’ve essentially been a part of the businesses my entire life, I only started receiving a paycheck once I was in college, and working part-time during my summer and winter breaks. Currently, I only work in the office on Wednesdays and Fridays, helping out wherever needed in the billing department, providing secretarial assistance, running parts to our technicians in the field or submitting fire plans to the Fire Departments.
My maternal grandparents originally started in the security industry back in 1947 when they purchased Certified Safe and Lock Company, Inc. (C.S.L.S., Inc.).
As my uncle and mom grew older, they found themselves as a locksmith and bookkeeper, respectively, alongside my grandpa and grandma. Back in those days, security technology was simply, locks, keys and safes. But, in 1972, under the guidance of my always curious uncle who wanted to discover how these new things called “computers” were going to play a role in future security abilities, Sacramento Valley Alarm Security System, Inc. (SVA) was born as a sister company to the already well established C.S.L.S., Inc. My mom became my uncle’s right hand when it came to building and guiding the business in what eventually became a well known name in the area of security in Sacramento. Their dream was to own and operate their own U.L. Listed Central Station in Sacramento, in the very building we still operate in today. And, with a lot of work, but in a reasonably short amount of time…their dream became a reality. It took little time after that to obtain accounts from three other alarm security businesses in the Sacramento area, for which we monitored alongside our growing number of accounts.
In the early 2000s we began using Radios to monitor the systems we were installing, which eventually led us to also use Cellular monitoring.
With every new avenue of security, knowledge of technology and space had to increase, and our little monitoring station outgrew itself. So, in 2011, as a means to assist my uncle into a much deserved retirement, and to help with our space issue, we transferred our monitoring station over to another, local business. And while we no longer operate as a 24/7/365 business out of our main office on Folsom Blvd, we are all still actively involved with working closely with our monitoring station so to provide the best product and service to our current and future customers.
C.S.L.S., Inc. is also still very much thriving! Most of our customers are dual customers, where they receive all their security needs from both companies.
I invite you to visit our website at www.sacalarm.com and checkout our “Internet Special” of a simple home alarm system. If that is too basic of a system, however, and you’d prefer something a little more custom, please contact our office at (916) 452-1481 and ask to set up a FREE consultation for a security system designed to your liking so to receive 10% off of a new alarm installation! Also, feel free to head into the Certified Safe & Lock showroom to receive 10% of your key purchase. For either 10% discount, just mention “Aquila Discount,” and our technicians will take care of you!
