A few months back, Jessica landed awkwardly on a rope coming down from a climb and turned her ankle badly. She kept her workouts consistent, scaled and modified as needed while the ankle healed up, and worked hard to regain normal function of her ankle. Unfortunately some ligaments were torn, and it wasn't looking like conservative treatment of the ankle was the answer for Jessica. She decided to have surgery in hopes of a better recovery from the injury.
Yesterday, and 4 days post ankle surgery, here she is back in the box and maintaining her fitness. I must admit, I was uneasy when I looked over and saw her in this handstand, but she rolled out of it gracefully to a pistol time and time again. Now I would never recommend this particular exercise to anyone, not even Jessica, but Jess has great body awareness and is completely comfortable doing these movements on one leg. It was her choice and her decision to work these skills, and what's appropriate for one may not be for another.
After stretching and working skills with our gymnastics class, she put together a WOD with one legged rowing, push ups, and pull ups. If someone less athletic or less fit were in a similar situation, it would be easy to scale things even further to keep them moving.
Anyhow, I just wanted to give props where due to an athlete who stays motivated and keeps the ball rolling. Again, I am not advocating that someone who just had an ankle surgery be doing handstands, but I am telling you to continue taking care of your body regardless of the condition you my find it in. Where there is a will, there is a way. If you are taking a break from exercise due to an injury, it's time to stop sitting at home rotting away with your excuses and find something you can do to stay healthy.
Good to see you back and smiling so soon! Remember to be patient and let your surgery heal as you continue to keep yourself fit. If I catch you trying to run anytime soon, I'm gonna beat you with a PVC pipe.
