Eat Healthy and Support Local Farmers

Guys-  On an almost daily basis I find that I am listening
to, or engaged in a conversation about nutrition at CFES!  It's
fantastic to be part of a community where food and nutrition are
important aspects of people's lives.

As you all
well know, Gia and I are pretty much obsessed with everything food,
particularly fresh fruits and vegetables.  About two years ago we
started subscribing to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) produce
box.  For $20/week, we get a box of locally grown, seasonal fruits and
vegetables.  It's really difficult to describe the quality and flavor
of this produce.  Take whatever you know about produce you've purchased
in a store and throw it out of your mind.  But more importantly, there
is the variety.  You would be surprised how narrow your choices are in
terms of produce at a store.  We've eaten produce we didn't even know
existed.  One of the keys to this is eating produce in season.  It
forces you to discover new and wonderful things.

We've
tried a couple of CSAs over the last two years and really like our
current one Riverdog Farm; http://www.riverdogfarm.com/.
They
also have things other than produce, like poultry and pork.  But their
main thing is produce.

So the way it works is
that you get a box at a pick up point (we get ours in Davis every
Friday).  I am thinking that CFES members would love this service and if
10 people would join, we could even designate our own drop/off point
for members and perhaps even negotiate a discount with Riverdog Farm.
There is no need to do this, as there is already a pickup point in
Sacramento, but having a pickup point near CFES would be cool!

What
do you guys think?  You up for trying something like this (yes Justin,
you need to eat vegetables)?  I am going to bring in some brochures and
put em up on the board.  So give it some thought.
