5 Rounds For Time:
10 Ball Slams 40/30

Last year's throwdown was considered by many to be the event of the year. That speaks volumes considering we have a lot of fun around here and many of us attend great events. This event is what truly strengthens our community! It is great to see a new CrossFit members experience exactly what a competitor feels when they are in the throws of a competition. Nerves, anxiety, fear of failure, jubilation, victory and many other emotions are experienced by an athlete when competing. It is the process itself that leads to improvement no matter the outcome! CrossFit East Sacramento to my knowledge is the originator of the Newbie Throwdown and many other facilities have since followed suit! WHY? (IT'S F'N FUN)
1. It builds community better than any other competition, it bridges the gap between new vs. experienced CrossFitters!
2. It allows new members to compete with like levels of experience!
3. It encourages members to step outside their comfort zone without feeling like they are competing against the best athletes in the world.
4. Veteran members meet new members and both grow from coaching and working together.
Rules:

Yay for Newbie Throwdown!
Wait, what happened to Jess? Is she ok?
brother mike
This is the first I am hearing about Jess’s ankle, all I know is that if tough counts for anything it won’t keep her down. Hopefully it’s not serious.
Ryan Lippmann
Thank God for the t-shirts my team made last year, otherwise i wouldn’t have remembered the NTD.
Count me in as a captain. If nothing else, my team will have the most fun.
Jessica
Hey all! Yes, I had a slight mishap on the rope this morning. I was higher than I expected. I couldn’t get my foot position, and thought it would be a good idea to just let go and restart. It wasn’t a good idea. I landed on the rope that was on the ground beneath me and my ankle snapped, a few times. First look by the e.r. doc and he said “THAT’s going to need surgery. And a few months of rehab”. After the xrays came back normal, he then said “I’m amazed. It must be all that weight-bearing exercise. Your bones are extraordinarily strong. I’ve NEVER seen an ankle like that NOT be broken and NOT need surgery”. So, crutches and non-weight bearing for a few weeks and a few more before I can start lifting/jumping/running full-force again. I am so thankful that this happened with such an amazing group of people. Travis- I love your honesty and you real-ness. I was too afraid to look, but your response was honest and just what I needed! That and your brute strength! Talk about FUNCTIONAL fitness : ) Justin, your cool composure and leadership while I was freaking out. Angela- I didn’t even know your name before today. You spent your morning holding my hand and hanging out with me in the er. You are a true blessing and I SO appreciate your kindness to a stranger. You are just who I needed by my side today.
Everyone else in the class today, thank you so much for your concern and support! I love this community. And Josh- you are so kind and gentle. From tying my shoelaces during a WOD so I can keep going, to removing my shoe so gently today when I was broken. I really appreciate how caring and compassionate everyone in our little community is. And I am glad to be a part of it. And, yes I am a little high off my pain meds : )
Justin Riley
Jess, so glad to hear that this won’t be as serious as it looked. Angela said the Dr’s first words were pretty much “multiple surgeries.” Keep icing, compression, and elevation as much as possible. You can come in for scaled/modified WODs as soon as your moving around. We will keep takin’ care of you.
For everyone else, please be aware of landing on the rope when coming down from a rope climb. Rolled ankles are a common rope climbing injury that can be avoided just by being aware that it can happen and looking where you are landing.

Jessica will jiu-jitsu this into accelerated healing and come back stronger than ever. Sending you lots of love.
Re: The Newbie Throwdown — of the BEST things I’ve done in my CrossFit experience. Nothing propels you like competition and wanting to perform for your teammates. Everyone got PRs at this event and it’s a day of pushing your edges, mentally/physically holding it together, and tons of celebration for your team and the community.
Pretty sure I drunkenly slapped the shoulders and beat the chests of fallen comrades in the moments after they finished the final chipper — the performances were so amazing and it’s incredible to see someone dig deep for an additional 10-15 reps when they have nothing left.
Attn All Newbies: DO THIS!!
Cherie Nabeta
Jessica – thank you for the update as we were wondering how you were doing. So glad its not broken! Take care of yourself and heal up quickly!
Kelli Brogan
Jessica,

Rena
Jessica get well soon! With all the support you will be back in action in no time.
As for the Throwdown…I am super sad. 🙁 I wish I would have known about this a few weeks ago. I have a trip to Vegas planned for that weekend. Why!!!! LOL!! I guess I will just have to send my support while sitting poolside sipping on a (many) cocktails!
