Crossfit cultivates a culture of comparison, to your peers, your former self, and the juggernauts you see on ESPN. For many this creates a competitive spirit that drives you towards faster times and bigger lifts. The habit of using easily quantifiable measures of fitness is surely our greatest asset. It provides immediate feedback as to how fit you are at that moment in time. We ask you to write your time, weight, and the degree of scaling on a large whiteboard for everyone to see. As CrossFitters we are asked to put it all out there…and if you laid it all on the line during the wod you might be fortunate enough to end up on the "wall-o-fame." This is a reward system to those who've put in the work and allows others to try and bump the 10 spot off the board (the most satisfying part of all).
However, for all of the effort we put into forcing you all to compare yourselves I want to reinforce that this is not what its all about. It's easy to get caught up in beating your arch nemesis and making it to the "wall-o-fame," but in the end this is highly unsatisfying. These ARE great tools for reinforcing your commitment and enthusiasm but don't allow CrossFit to be a source of stress when its intended to be a relief. It does me little good to know that Justin Jerks more than 300 pounds, Travis can deadlift nearly triple bodyweight, Lene can workout semi annually and still beat my ass at this or that (for the record Lene changed the blog to mention himself…I just caught it before publishing, but it can stay up), Aaron has a sub 3-min fran time, Josh runs a sub-5 minute mile, etc…. but I do know these things, and sometimes its not for the better. Though those who've performed extraordinary feats like these should certainly be applauded for their efforts, I beg you not to give Justin the satisfaction of allowing his numbers to make you feel insecure about yourself. It's easy to go down the path of where you are or who your stats say you are… do not fall victim.
Just so you all feel more insecure about yourselves: This Link allows you to rank athletes according to deadlift 1RM, Fran time, and I hear they're working on inseam size.

Although for what it’s worth, the comparisons do help me understand the possible.

Pretty tough not to compare around here but I’m getting better at using it as a motivator rather than letting it get me down…but I have my moments.
Welcome Amy and great job today early birds! Sorry I had to bail out so soon. Swim practice and soccer game Saturday.
Good luck to all those competing this weekend! Kick some booty!!!

Thanks for this post Blake. I agree with Cherie-it’s hard not to compare with so many amazing athletes around here to chase. But really, Crossfit is about working for personal bests, whatever they may be. I’m going to really try and start being satisfied with my own growth/gains rather than thinking I’m still “not as good, strong, fast as _____”. That’s not productive : )

Now.., if I could only make the clean at 3 bills!
I have to say, as much as it pisses me off that I know Rich Frowing can Bench 325, Clean 335, and OH Squat 360, fucking beast! I am gratified that I can bench 325, and am motivated by his show of what is possible for an average stature white boy in terms of Cleans and OH Squats. It gives me motivation and purpose to keep training.
Knowing these types of things does not discourage me, it gives me hope and fuels the fire to get better. It tells me that maybe you don’t have to be a fat weightlifting specialist to make lifts that seem almost impossible. That is the key to staring at stats. Find motivation, not discouragement. If you are not in Frowing’s league, find someone who is in your league to compare to and strive after. Not that I am a Rich Frowing, but doesn’t mean I am gonna stop trying.

Justin: and not only that, but you can do 50 pushups!
