Here is a great testimonial by Miranda from Chico. She has been working with our kettlebell coach Darrin, and had this to say about her experience.
I am a Cross-fitter… there I have said it out loud. I love the challenging WOD workouts against the clock, the dynamic athletic moves involved, the raw feel of the Box, calloused hands, scabbed shins, and the group energy. However I found that the desire to excel was causing pain and wear and tear on my body. I didn’t know why I could not execute the movements correctly. I have always been an athlete -competitive downhill skier, cross country runner and fitness professional. I should get this right!? However after few months into classes I took a step and my calf locked up and pulled. I couldn’t believe it. I was taking a step not doing DUs, Burpees, snatches etc. kind of an ego blow. I saw my Chiropractor and he pleasantly told me it was a common injury for” Women my age”. It’s a good think he is my friend or he might have a black eye now. I would not accept that as answer to my calf situation. He taped it did some ART but I knew that there had to me more to this. I have to mention that I had just attended a NeuroKentic Therapy training that gave me more insight and information about how the body works. I knew that if I did not address the “WHY” to this injury it would just continue to be an issue.
Unfortunately or maybe fortunately- the closest person I knew that was a NKT- NeuroKentic practitioner was 1.5 hours away. Since I am an endorphin junky I wanted to get this fixed! How could I take time off? Miss a WOD?! So off I went to Sacramento to get this puzzle figured out.
Darrin Litton came to my rescue. He did a full evaluation of my lower body and found that I had been using my gastroc instead of my toe flexors to put is simply. I gained immediate relief and my strained gastroc was able to heal. I mentioned to him on my next visit to check my calf that I had noticed a catching clicking feeling in my left shoulder. My shoulder and triceps had been repeatedly, treated with Rock Tape, Chiro adjustments ART, Trigger message etc for several months but it just didn’t feel the same as my right side and I couldn’t get the muscles to engage on the left like my right side. It was making pull-ups, TTB, and lifts challenging and I didn’t want to have another setback like the calf!
Darrin was able to release and address the muscular compensation on my left shoulder as well. I had to scale back workouts and spend some time away from my beloved Box but I am back stronger and I know I will now be able to execute the Olympic lifts I was struggling to prefect. One of the best things is TTBs are a lot easier with better shoulder mobility and my strength is increasing! I am learning that more is not always better and there are time to push though and times to rest and regroup. Your body will tell you many things you just have to listen or find someone like Darrin who can piece together what it is saying. Thank you Darrin!!!!

Miranda – Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I have done some kinetic therapy in the past and found it to be extremely relieving of pain and enabling me to get back in the gym right away. However, after speaking just briefly with Darrin, it seems he takes it to a whole new level. I know many of us could certainly benefit from his knowledge and expertise, especially considering he is literally in our own backyard and not a one and a half hour drive.

I really recommend trying Darrin’s kettlebell class. I’ve only been there once myself (so far) due to scheduling constraints, but even one class was helpful in terms of feeling my way into better movement patterns. Plus Darrin is a good bloke.
