Rest Day
You have probably noticed the new flag hanging in the gym, which was donated by Deedee Clark. Many of you may not know the significance of the flag and I didn't either, but I did a little research to find out what is symbolizes, and today is a perfect day to remember the meaning of this flag. This flag is known as the First Navy Jack, and it is one of the utmost patriotic symbols of our country. It is flown on Navy ships on the jack staff which is a short flag pole at the bow of a ship. Its origins date back to the Revolutionary War and it was symbolic of our resistance to Great Britain.
The flag bears 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies and the snakes rattle has 13 layers. The snake has long been a symbol of American resistance to Great Britain. The snake specifically symbolizes a creature that is harmless until it is provoked and represents the attitude, that "we wont mess with you unless you mess with us first," which is echoed by the phrase "Don't Tread On Me."
On the one year anniversary of September 11th, the flag was recommissioned and is now flown on the jack staff of all Navy ships as a symbol of the war on terror.
