Hi my name is Ben Ridley, I’m 27 years old, I’m married to an awesome lady named Ruth-Ann and we have 3 awesome kids together. Ava will be 5 in June, Savannah is 3, and Judah just turned 2. I’m originally from the great land of England but my family immigrated to America when I was about 6 years old. We first lived in New Jersey then moved to Connecticut where I was introduced to a variety of American sports, one of which was Baseball. When I was 11 we moved back to England and remained there for 3 years. During that time I was re-introduced to Rugby, Cricket, and Football (soccer). Needless to say, sports have been a huge part of my life regardless of which side of the Atlantic we lived. We moved back to Connecticut in 2000 and I picked up baseball again and that became my focus for the rest of my time in High School. I continued to play baseball in college until a rotator cuff injury sidelined me after my freshman year. I then turned my attention to Rugby and played at NC State for a year until I discovered that college was too bloody expensive! I spent a year traveling Europe when I was 20 and played Baseball for the Liverpool Trojans in England. I was invited to try out for Great Britain’s national baseball team but broke my leg playing Pub-Leauge Soccer one month before the try-out. I came back to Connecticut and once I was fit enough I played Rugby for the New Haven All Blacks.
I began working for a successful construction company and had aspirations of starting my own business until the great depression of 2008 hit, which was also the year that I got married to Ruth-Ann. After a year of landscaping and after we had welcomed our first little girl Ava, I decided to bite the bullet and finish my degree. In the 3 years it took to finish my degree we had 2 more kids, Savannah, and then Judah. I graduated last May with a degree in Exercise Science and a K-12 PE teaching certification.
About 2 years ago my wife and I started thinking about re-locating to California to be close to some great friends of ours, and quite frankly, we were growing tired of the agonizing east coast winters. Ruth-Ann found a job in Sacramento as an RN Case Manager and we found a great spot to live in Folsom. After 8 months of being a stay at home dad I landed a job at Mercy General as a Case Management Coordinator and began working there in February.
I was introduced to CrossFit by a friend back in 2012 and I bought in right away. Unfortunately I was only able to keep it up for 6 months before my student teaching and our busy lives got in the way, but I vowed to get back to CrossFit once we moved to Cali and after I landed a job. I was thrilled to find CFES and I plan on getting back into the best shape of my life. I currently play indoor soccer and my wife and I are active in our community and local church. We’ve met some awesome people in Sacramento County and continue to be amazed at how nice everyone is on this side of the country (definitely a lot nicer than the north-east). My family all moved back to England over the years, and my Dad lives in Bermuda, while Ruth-Ann has family in Connecticut still, as well as Jamaica. Needless to say, we have plenty of people to stay with when we travel!
I look forward to sweating to know you all more.
