Brian and Cherie have been working out at CFES since actually before we even officially opened. You can read their CrossFit testimonial here (scroll down about 1/4 of the page), and they were actually the subjects of the first ever CFES WOD video I ever made. They have been here every single day that work or swimming has not taken them away from Sacramento. These guys are not only stellar athletes in our gym, but are two of the friendliest and most supportive individuals in the gym as well. At 8am you can always expect to see their smiling faces working hard and encouraging others. They have thrown an open invite Halloween party for the last 4 years, and participated in our gym in every possible way since day one.
Thank you guys for always being such a huge part of our CFES community.
Where did you grow up?
B: Berkeley, CA
C: On Makapipipi Street in Mililani, HI
How did you two meet?
B: A mutual friend introduced us at a local grocery store at BYU.
C: Swimmers and tennis players partied together at BYU. I used to sit on a stationary bike and check out B in the weight room while he did leg presses and arm curls in front of a mirror. I baked him lemon bars and cookies to get him to visit me. It worked! Either that or it was the fuzzy navel he made me at a Halloween Party…it’s all a bit fuzzy.
What did you want to be when you grew up? What did you end up doing?
B: I wanted to do something in business and ended up being a swim coach.
C: I wanted to work for a big accounting firm in San Francisco and wear suits and high heels to work every day. I ended up being an Operations Manager for a software company, wearing sweaty CrossFit clothes at home every day.
What is a typical weekend like?
CRAZY! Swim practice or swim meet, CrossFit class or competition, soccer or baseball game, homework and projects and lots of cheat meals.
Favorite place to eat?
We have an ‘OMG’ list of favorite places to eat. Buffalo burger at Carpe Diem, chicken and waffles at Cafeteria L, & lemon pancakes at Katrina’s are on the list.
Paleo or PaleNo?
B&C: PaleNO
When did you begin CrossFitting?
2008 when we got a taste of it from Justin and Travis at Arden Hills. It took months for Cherie to link 2 kipping pull ups and did her first Fran with one at a time thrusters off a rack. After CFES opened, we worked out with Loren at Ocho before it became an official class time.
Favorite WOD/Lift?
B: 30 MU’s for time
C: Grace (just so happens to also be the name of B’s girlfriend when we first met)
Most memorable CrossFit moment?
B: Making finals of NorCal 40’s in January, 2013
C: My first muscle up
One piece of bacon left on the plate. Who gets it?
B: Me
C: Kaleo
List 5 things we don’t know about you.
B:
- I have a younger sister
- I once weighed 240lbs, had a cholesterol level of 600+ and was on cholesterol medication
- I am a member of the CrossFit Endurance coaching staff
- I majored in History
- I was Cherie’s ‘waterboy’ when she was playing tennis at BYU
C:
- I am known in my extended family as the family clutz
- I have a fear of frogs and toads
- I hardly every swore before I started CrossFit
- I used to collect Barbie dolls and still have 81 of them in unopened boxes. Harley Davidson #1 is in a case.
- I used to be on a cross-country team…just kidding! Before B, the kids and CrossFit, my life revolved around tennis. I loved it and spent hours at the local tennis courts in Hawaii playing with the boys. My coach used to yell at us for playing too long and kick us off the courts. She also made me do push-ups every time I double-faulted. It didn’t help my serve much but my push-ups are not bad because of it.
