Newbie Update

5 Rounds for Time
7 Thursters 135/95
10 Chest To Bar Pullup
200 m Run

First and foremost, make sure you scroll down and read the March 7th post if you missed the first POST ABOUT THE NEWBIE THROWDOWN!!!

The Newbie Throwdown is getting a buzz. Those that know about it have been very excited to get involved and Travis and I are very happy to see the number of people who have never competed in a "games" type event and look forward to an event that is geared down a notch for our majority athlete in our facility.  Remember, this Throwdown is about building the community within CFES.  It allows the natural gap between Level 1, veteran athletes and new members who have never competed or take advantage of our Foundations program.  To clarify, there are several questions that seem to be popping up about this Throwdown.  All questions need to be directly e-mailed to Chris@crossfiteastsac.com or Travis@crossfiteastsac.com. Do not ask questions during class and please only direct questions to Chris and Travis since we are the ones programming and designing this Thwodown.

The point of this announcement is to let people know what is to happen during this week and announce the specific dates of what is to happen.

Who is qualified to participate?  What is a NEWBIE? Anyone who is in Foundations, or in this case anyone who has never participated in a Throwdown event. So a common question that has been asked… Can a person who is a level 1 but has never participated in an actual competition, compete in this event?  YES! Travis and I will both assigning the teams with the Coaches. If you are on the fence as to where you fit in… again, e-mail me or Travis and we will make sure you are able to participate on some level.  To make it more specific… I would rather say it this way, WHO CAN'T PARTICIPATE?  Anyone who has attended CFES for over 1 year AND is LEVEL 1.  Anyone who has participated in a throwdown or competed in the past… YOU MUST BE A COACH unless specifically assigned by Chris and Travis to be a team member.

How do you initially enroll and sign up for this event?   Since this is an "in-house" event, simply write your name this week on the white board next to the WONDERFULLY NEAT AND TIDY BUMPER PLATE STACK. Make sure you place 3 options for times in order of preference as to what time you would like to be assigned to show up 1x per week for the next 6 weeks in order to workout as a team and your coach can get to know your strength and weaknesses.

When will the optional Saturday Workouts happen? The first one will be next Saturday the 26th of March.  The next 3 will be held on Saturday April 9th, April 23rd and the final will be May 7th.  These workouts will be OPEN GYM time to work on exactly what you believe your weaknesses to be. The time of these workouts will be from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

Captain Party and Team Assignment: This Saturday, March 19th at the Corner Bar located on J and 57th Street.  We will meet on the patio outside.  Essentially have our own little fantasy football draft if you will.  Ultimately, teams will be assigned by times and fairness in order to make the teams as balanced as possible.  Travis and I will go over some of the key points of this Throwdown and we will let the coaches know exactly what their responsibilities will be for their team.

Day of the EVENT: This event will kick off at 9am  on the 14th of MAY! It will be an all day event.  We will then have a BBQ and member appreciation party in which CFES will be hosting and thanking you all for being the amazing community you are.  Please send RSVP's to Chris@crossfiteastsac.com.  Any and everyone can attend this party. Bring family. All we ask is a minor $10.00 Donation for FOOD AND BOOZE. Travis, Justin and I will take care of the rest.

It is time to celebrate our wonderful NEW MEMBERS… without you guys, this community doesn't grow and it certainly won't continue to educate other people about Crossfit and what it is really about!  Thank you for being so inspirational and motivated in kicking this Event off.

Speaking of inspiration… Justin shows off his talent, or lack there of.  He is kicking off our event with his version of the Star Spangled Banner! Please let me know if you would like him to sing this live at the opening of our Throwdown… I had a hard time booking Christina Agulara.  Nobody has ever accused Justin of not being able to laugh at himself…

I never realized Justin had such a lovely singing voice!!!

  2. brother mike

    I used to wish I could sing, now I just wish Justin could. Gutsy performance, you won’t catch me singing.;

  3. All of you who have ever been embarrassed, called out or put in the spotlight by Justin for being a little “slow”. (for lack of a polite or better term) Now is your chance to blast him back. I assure you, Justin dishes it out hard somethimes, but he takes anything he dishes out very well. Let him have it!

  4. Wow, I was hoping this wouldn’t ever show up. I couldn’t even watch. Letting Lene make blogs is like giving your teenager keys to the corvette, not the best idea.

  5. brother mike

I registered for sectionals and got an ‘unable to send e-mail error’ but also got a ‘your request has been sent to the team owner.’ Justin, let me know if you got my request to join the team.

  6. Hahah awesome! Crazy, drunken, CFES karaoke tour needs to happen, pronto.
Justin, add “giving Lene the keys to the whiteboard” to your list of not great ideas. My eyeballs and soul are in need of a priest and shower after Friday’s debauchery.

  7. Big Rob

So many ways to describe that performance…. it was a mix of Fergie and Jesus….wait sorry, thought I was watching Will Ferral sing, lol, keep it up guys.

  8. I couldn’t stop laughing, very entertaining, Justin -> Did you need any volunteers for the Newbie Throwdown? I wouldn’t be able to compete until I get this shoulder “fixed”.

    God Bless America!
Hey Mike, on BTWB I can never post a result on the workouts that you create. Any ideas as to why?

  10. Justin: we all have our comfort zone, don’t we? Well, I won’t complain if you won’t. Cheers!

  11. So, bring family. Cool… Say we don’t like our family all that much… Can we bring friends instead?
What time are we meeting at the corner bar. Saturday work days are killing my ability to get in on all the fun like pain storms, sectionals, and open gym.

  12. Liz

Hey Chris.. What time on Saturday at Corner Bar?

  13. Sean T, I’ve opened up a support request with BTWB for this issue. It seems to be an issue when we set the WOD from a member’s posted workout, though not an issue when we use one created by a member of another gym. Will let you know after they get back to me.

  14. Dang it, I can’t make it to Corner Bar on Saturday as I have class from 8-5 : ( I’ll have to get the scoop from another Newbie!
No words (just silent laughter as my students are completing a reading assessment)on the Star Spangled catastrophe.

  15. Wait… Am I a captain or a coach?

  16. I propose the meeting start at 4 or 5 pm. Otherwise evening plans might get in the way. Plus those that work can show up at 5:30. But it is Chris’ call.
Thank goodness for the mute AND pause button. I had to use both to make sure I was not ever going to hear Justin sing again.

  17. I’ve been told the Corner Bar meetup this Saturday is just for coaches/captains/commandantes, and that Chris will be polling the coaches by phone in the next day or so to find the best time everyone is available.

  18. The Coaches meeting is this Saturday… Coaches will be receiving a PHONE CALL Directly from me about the time. I am thinking after class around 12:00pm. This gathering is for COACHES ONLY… Not the athlete participant. So don’t stress. As a coach, if you can’t make it Saturday, don’t worry about it. We will make sure you are organized and assigned a proper team. I will be going over your team, responsibilities and what we are looking to accomplish. Thanks for all your questions and input. Looking forward to having a great event. You guys are awesome with all this response and feedback.

What did I just watch?! What has been heard cannot be un-heard!

  20. OH, I wish I had speakers at work…or maybe I don’t. Shoot, I’ll have to wait until I get home.

  21. jen

Anne.. just think back to the night that justin and travis got boo’d off your karaoke video game.. only worse.

  22. Lene- This Saturday the CFES Team will be doing the Open Sectionals WOD in Rocklin starting at 11:00. That might affect the number of coaches/colonels/admirals that can make the noon meeting on Saturday. It might have to be drinks later in the day.

  23. Brooke – You are a great encourager! Thank you for hanging in the box this Foundation’s noon class ‘till the last guy came in. As I ran the last half, I kept think: she’s going to be there…run. Then when I past the gate, I heard you call – “come on grandpa”. It was what I had hoped for. Your attention to the details, making sure each move is to form, has raised the bar of CFES beyond outstanding. It is a wonderful privilege to be trained by a true goddess.

Wow. That video is tragic. It actually motivated me to post for the first time. Go On-Rampers!

  25. Amy K

I’m thinking of uploading all the videos/picutres Maggie takes on my phone while waiting for me during the 9am class, they’ve got to be about as good as this rendtion.

  26. There are 878 athletes registered in our Region for the CrossFit Opens.

  27. suzi

Justin, you’ve got cahones. I love it!

  28. Brian

Awesome that 878 athletes are in our region. I hope I place at least 877th.

  29. Lesley Heller

OMG WTF was that. I just lost my hearing. At least now thatI am deaf I won’t have to listen to Justin and Travis rag on me. Chris I signed up to be a coach but won’t be able to make the meeting on Sat.

  30. That was beautiful. Well done, Justin. Well done.

  31. Maggie

Wow, that is impressive. Go Hard or go home.
