Here is our currently registered athletes for the 2014 CrossFit Open which will begin on Thursday February 27th. We are off to a good start for being a month out, but we will be expecting to see many more of you on this list.
Should I participate in the Open?
To answer you simply, YES!!! Why you might ask? There are many reasons you should participate, the biggest being the community aspect of the event. This will be our 4th year participating in the Open and I can tell you that seeing our members come together and support each other they way they always do is the coolest thing that happens here all year. This is your chance to set a goal for yourself and try to achieve. We train hard all year, now is the time to measure your results. Don’t be scared, be determined. Regardless of where you fall on the great scale of ability within our gym, we will all be excited and proud to see you participate.
Am I good enough to do the Open?
Yes. If you are newer to CrossFit, there will likely be a few things that you cannot complete. However, most of the challenges allow everyone to get on the board before thy get to a point in the workout where things get really difficult.
I have personally witnessed countless events where our members did something they had never done before, then followed it up with that same thing over and over again. To put it simply, participating in this event takes beginners to another level. The workouts are not at the crazy elite level that you see on ESPN and in our PRx program, but rather very similar to the level of workouts in our GPP program. They are aimed to be inclusive to most all CrossFit participants. You should not be intimidated because you are newer of less fit than others. You should take this as an opportunity to challenge yourself and to get a true measurement of where you stand, so you can do it again next year and see your improvement.
How does the Open work?
Well it’s pretty simple. First you go here to register. Pay your 20 bucks and choose your affiliate, “CrossFit East Sac” of course. The first of 5 workouts will be released on Thursday February 27th and you will have until the following Monday to complete it and enter your score online. You will watch a video of the movement standards on the Games website, read the rules, confirm with a coach that you understand the rules, grab a buddy to judge you and enter your score into the Games site. I will then verify and validate your score which will be compared against our gym, the NorCal region, and 100’s of 1000’s of people from all over the world.
Every Saturday for the 5 weeks of the Open, we have a big WOD party and take turns doing the WODs, cheering and judging for one another.
What if I am scared?
Stop being a puss. Challenging yourself and willingly putting yourself in stressful situations is the exact way you better yourself. If you aren’t willing to do that, you may want to re-think why it is you workout here? Those who avoid discomfort are doomed to remain the same. Those who face their fears will grow and thrive.
What if I cannot complete the Rx’ed weight or a particular movement in a workout?
Then we coach you and work with you and do our best to fix that problem. If it just isn’t going to happen, you will get a score for what you could do and we will scale the rest of the workout so you still get a good WOD in that day. The things that you couldn’t do will become your new goals moving forward.
What if I can’t be there on Saturday’s of have to travel?
If you cannot make it on Saturday, you are free to do the WOD on another day and if you are traveling, you must do the WOD at another CF facility. You may also do a video submission if you are traveling, but be sure to follow the video submission rules precisely if you must do that.
Who should not participate?
There is only one type of person who I believe should refrain from participating in the Open… a quitter. It’s quite disappointing to see people give up on themselves. There are some circumstances where people cannot complete the event including sickness or injury or extended business travel. We understand those types of things. Those who get down on themselves due to a lower than expected outcome and drop out of the Open are the quitters. They are the same people who will soon after quit the gym as their habit is to quit and to run from challenging situations. If you are a quitter, just stay home. If you are determined to finish regardless of where you may stand, sign up now, you won’t regret it!
