In the old days, there were three Olympic lifts.  The snatch, the clean and jerk, and the clean and press.  I had trouble finding any videos showing the old Olympic press, which we will probably never do here, but wanted to show you guys something you may have never seen.  Lifters used to sort of kip from the hip to pop the bar up into the press, then lean back under it to catch it in a strong position for the upper body and finish the press.  The lift was very difficult to judge because it was difficult to tell if the knees bent.  The knees were supposed to stay locked out, but many lifts were called good that had a visible knee bend.  Eventually the sport abolished the lift due to the difficulty to judge and lifters temptations to toe the line on the rules.  It was a very difficult maneuver to perform.  Here is a video of a 507 clean and press.

For more info on the history of the clean and press you can read this article by Bill Starr.

Our shoulder presses today will be strict, meaning you may not bend the knees at all, and you may not attempt to use your hips to accelerate the bar upward.  Get strong!
