If you are having difficulty getting into an organized position and do what your coach is asking of you, it might be because you can’t.  Don’t let that get you down, just address the problem. Limitations in mobility and stability can come from joint and soft tissue restrictions or inadequacies which are just symptoms of a hidden cause.  The trick is to identify the true cause and fix it.  Many times the problem lies in the motor control center in the brain which is operating with less than optimal motor control patterns, which in turn leads to less than optimal performance and injury.  Addressing the faulty motor control issue ends the problem at the source.  That means that the improvements in soft tissue stick and you can move on to better things than rolling around on the floor with a foam roll or lacrosse ball.

There are several tools which address these issues at their different levels, but to get started, the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT) should be every person’s starting point.  The FMS is used to rank and grade basic human movement patterns.  The screen exposes the problems we are dealing with and allows us to establish a starting point from which to get started. This baseline of movement gets used to check the effectiveness of the corrective strategy by retesting when appropriate. The FMS is used by professional, collegiate, Olympic, and tactical athletes around the world. It should be standard operating procedure for any person asking more out of their body.

NeuroKinetic Therapy is a method of identifying and fixing the compensation patterns being used in the brain. Fix the pattern, fix the problem, increase the performance, increase durability. It is like taking the parking brake off.  We all operate with dysfunctional motor control patterns to some degree. Those patterns become more apparent and more important to fix as we push ourselves physically.

Darrin Lenton has setup shop in our annex down the parking lot, next to the dance studio. He has already started fixing old, painful problems for our athletes and increasing their performance in the gym. There are few things as sweet as pain free reps and adding weight to the bar without working for it.
