A bunch of you might be at the CrossFit Games, or at least live streaming it here. Also this weekend are USA Weightlifting National Championships, live streamed here. Coach Kari lifts at 7am PST Sunday.

Here’s a view of the platform–wait, what’s that in the background? Hmm…

I arrived Thursday after taking the red-eye in, and came in to warm up lifts. The venue is at a roller skating rink, and they kindly left the disco lights on for that evening’s warm-up session.

Lots of great lifters here, and today and Sunday should be a showdown. One of the great parts of being in NorCal is lifting in the Pacific Weightlifting Association (PWA), which is well-represented at Nationals. Some warm-up sessions are just like home, with tons of lifters from our local meets. Make sure you sign up for the Kono August 17th here at Sac High (entry here). Check out the schedule if you can’t make that one. Who knows, maybe the American Open or Nationals are in your future!

USAW2

Oh yeah, we’re in a roller skating rink. Strangely, un-airconditioned in solidarity with the Games.

I had a fun time in the 69/75/75+ B session. For the curious, national meets require a qualifying total, and that total determines which session you lift in (based on gender, weight class, and cutoff score).

Warm-ups here are a little different from local meets, with a lot of lifters clustered around the same weights. 3 attempts at the snatch and 3 at the clean and jerk require an experienced coach/handler to warm you up and keep you prepped properly. I strongly encourage you to watch at least a few lifters on the live stream (aka Kari!) to get a feeling for the rules and procedures of a meet. Ended up making my openers but missing my later attempts (some were close, some were hilarious/embarrassing–video will probably surface in the next few days). Thanks to those who helped, and good luck to Kari!
