My name is Beth Helton and though I’m a newbie to East Sac, I’ve been CrossFitting for just over 4 years now.  I began my CrossFit journey at San Francisco CrossFit, in the “parking lot of dreams” with KStar, Carl Paoli, Diane Fu, and so many other amazing coaches who have made me the athlete I am today.  I was there for about 3-1/2 years, and recently moved to Telegraph CrossFit, also in San Francisco, owned by former SFCF coach Angel Orozco.

I am up here in Sacramento for the next two months doing the equivalent of a “residency” as a nurse-midwife at Kaiser South Sacramento—I spend my Wednesdays training with your wonderful member of the month, Annie Redman, a masterful midwife!  I will be here through mid-June for sure, then I will graduate from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) with my masters degree in nursing and take my midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner boards this summer.  Beyond that—who knows?  I’m hoping to find a job working with a great hospital- or birth center-based midwifery practice.

Back in SF I have a wonderful husband of nearly 9 years, Matt, who is also a CrossFitter.  Matt works as an in-house lawyer at Palantir, a tech company in Silicon Valley.  We have a German shepherd-mix rescue pup named Cookie, and a cute little rescue kitty named Bitty.  Fun fact: last year Matt and I both made it into the preliminary round of the TV show American Ninja Warrior, though we both fell really early on, and if you blinked, you may have missed us!

In terms of CrossFit, I went to regionals in 2012 with the SFCF team, and then went again last year as an individual.  I narrowly missed it this year, and have been feeling pretty disappointed about how the Open turned out for me (apparently, full time school + night shifts on labor and delivery aren’t ideal for training).  I’m not sure what my CrossFit plans are for next year, but right now I really just want to get the “fun” back…I’ve enjoyed attending classes with you guys at East Sac, meeting new people up here, and starting to get that joy and “will to CrossFit” back!  Many thanks to you all—and to your wonderful, patient coaches—for being so welcoming of me.  It is so nice to have a gym full of my CrossFit people up here—a home away from home!
